Can World Cup celebration photos save jury duty-skipping Alyssa Healy?

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

According to posts on Twitter, Alyssa Healy could be in trouble after missing  jury duty, but at least she has a good excuse, having done so to play a starring role in Australia’s historic T20 World Cup victory.

Australia’s ace wicketkeeper tweeted that she sent photos of her team’s celebrations to the sheriff to explain her absence, and even if that story doesn’t get her off the hook, perhaps she’ll consider it worth it anyway. Healy smashed 75 off 39 balls, breaking a slew of records to earn the Player of the Match award in front of a world-record attendance for a women’s cricket match at a packed MCG.

She and Australia then partied long into the night, joining pop star Katy Perry on stage for the climax of her performance. Healy later called it “the best day of her life”.

Missing jury duty in Australia can incur a fine of up to AU$2,200, unless a ‘reasonable excuse’ can be demonstrated. However, while Healy has 86,174 witnesses to call upon to corroborate her story, she is already making plans for life behind bars.
