Rishabh Pant misses out on India squad for World Cup

by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

India have announced their squad for the 2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, with wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant missing out on selection.

Dinesh Karthik has been included in the 15-man squad, with Vijay Shankar also making the cut alongside fellow all-rounder Hardik Pandya.

The 21-year-old Pant featured in India’s recent five-match ODI series against Australia, and returned 52 runs from two innings. Karthik was omitted from India’s squad for that series, as the hosts were defeated 3-2 by the visiting Australians.

Ambati Rayudu also misses out on selection, having been a regular presence in India’s ODI squads since last year’s Asia Cup. KL Rahul is included after making a sole appearance in the home series against Australia. The Kings XI Punjab batsman is currently the second-leading run-scorer in the Indian Premier League, with his 335 runs from eight matches coming at an average of 67.

Shankar’s inclusion comes after he made his ODI debut in January. In nine ODIs, he averages 33 with the bat – his highest score is 46 – and 94 with the ball, having taken two wickets. The other seam-bowling all-rounder in the squad is Hardik Pandya, who missed the recent Australia series due to a back issue.

Squad: Virat Kohli (c), Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Vijay Shankar, MS Dhoni (wk), Kedar Jadhav, Dinesh Karthik, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami
