Watch: Sachin Tendulkar flummoxes Moin Khan with googly with the last ball of the day’s play
Watch: Sachin Tendulkar bowled Moin Khan with an excellent googly with the last ball of the third day’s play at the Multan Test match of 2003/04.
After Rahul Dravid won the toss, Virender Sehwag blazed away to 309 – the first triple hundred by an Indian in Test cricket – at the Multan Cricket Stadium.
On the second evening, Dravid created some controversy by declaring the Indian innings closed on 675-5 with Tendulkar on 194. Pakistan, 42-0 by stumps, batted aggressively the next day, battling hard to save the follow-on.
Yasir Hameed made 91 and captain Inzamam-ul-Haq 77, and on the flat wicket, the India bowlers had picked up only five wickets when Tendulkar came to bowl the last ball of the day, to Moin.
Pakistan were 364-5 at this point, with Abdul Razzaq at the other end. India needed to break the stand if they wanted to make their way into Pakistan’s long tail.
Tendulkar and Moin had exchanged words during the partnership. “Main ise pehle bhi out kar chuka hoon, aaj bhi main isko out karunga” (“I have dismissed him before, I shall dismiss him again”), quipped Tendulkar.
“Aaj to main tujhe chhakka maarunga” (“I shall hit you for six today”), responded Moin. “Chalo, maar ke dikhao” (“go ahead, try it”), went Tendulkar.
Once an aspirant fast bowler who was turned down by Dennis Lillee at the MRF Pace Academy, Tendulkar began his international career as a a medium-pacer, but later expanded his repertoire to include off-breaks and leg-breaks.
Now he tossed up the ball, on middle stump. Moin did not read the googly, which sped through his legs and hit the leg-stump. As a visibly confused Moin stood at the crease, Tendulkar broke into an uncharacteristically extravagant celebration that he seldom demonstrated even after reaching his hundreds.
Led by Irfan Pathan (4-100), India bowled out Pakistan for 407 next day, and then for 216, Anil Kumble (6-72). It was the first time they won a Test match, and subsequently a Test series, in Pakistan.
