Mohammad Irfan bowls 23 dot balls in four-over spell

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Irfan made T20 history with his splendid spell of 4-3-1-2 for Barbados Tridents against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the 16th match of Caribbean Premier League 2018.

Irfan’s effort, however, went in vain as SKNP clinched a fairly comfortable six-wicket victory.

Irfan, 36, bowled 23 dot balls in his four-over spell and scalped two wickets in the process. He has now bowled the most economical four-over spell in T20 cricket at 0.25 runs per over, ahead of Chris Morris and Chanaka Welegedara (0.50 runs per over).

The 7-ft-1-inch pacer wrecked havoc in Bridgetown, dismissing Chris Gayle off the first ball, and getting Evin Lewis in his next over. The first run he conceded came off the last delivery in his fourth over.

While Irfan bowled exceptionally, his teammates couldn’t follow suit, as Jason Holder, Steve Smith, Ashley Nurse, and Raymon Reifer were taken apart by the Patriots’ middle order. Chasing a target of 148, they got there in 18.5 overs.

“I’m really happy. I would’ve been happier if the team won, but I am happy that I bowled one of the best spells in T20 cricket,” said Irfan after the match. “I liked bowling on the lively wicket, and I get extra bounce because of my height, so yes, a satisfying performance.”

Here’s where Irfan’s economy stands among those T20 bowlers who have sent down their full quota of overs:
