Watch: Washington Sundar grabs three wickets in the space of five balls to end wicketless streak

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Washington Sundar picked up his first wicket of the 2023 IPL of David Warner and followed it up with two more scalps in the same over to leave Delhi Capitals reeling today (April 24).

Sundar, who had bowled 13.4 overs in six games before the clash against DC and had gone wicketless, also conceding runs at 8.63 per over, fought back on Monday, picking up three wickets in the space of five deliveries to leave the rivals in a spot of bother.

The off-spinner did not have the greatest start to the game, conceding 13 runs in the first over that he bowled, with Warner hitting him for a four and then a six in successive balls. However, he bounced back in the very next over he sent down, first bowling a dot to the left-hander and then picking up his first wicket of the season as he dismissed Warner with a ball that slid down the leg-side.

New batter Manish Pandey got off the strike on the next ball, leaving Sarfaraz Khan to face Sundar. Batting on 10, Sarfaraz tried playing the sweep shot off a tossed-up delivery, but Bhuvneshwar Kumar latched onto an easy catch. Two balls later, Sundar had his third of the over, as Aman Khan came down the track and tried to slog to leg, only to see the thick outside edge carrying to Abhishek Sharma at cover. “Goes six matches without a wicket and then takes three in one,” claimed Harsha Bhogle.

Delhi were reduced to 62-5 after the over and eventually managed 144-9 in their 20 overs. Sundar ended with figures of 3-28.
