Watch: Vijay Shankar helmed a match-changing cameo in Gujarat Titans‘ come-from-behind chase against Kolkata Knight Riders, hitting three sixes off Varun Chakravarthy in a 24-run over that put the defending champions on course for a seven-wicket win in today’s IPL 2023 match.

Shankar, batting at four, struck an unbeaten 24-ball 51, two fours and five sixes included, which helped seal Titans’ chase 180-run chase in 17.5 overs.

Gujarat’s innings hit a silent phase in the middle: after the end of the 14th over, they were at 111-3. In the next 23 balls, they hit 69 runs. Shankar, 12 off 12 at one point, made 39 off his next 12.

The 15th and 16th overs fetched them 31 runs combined, but it was the 17th over, bowled by Chakravarthy, that completely turned the game on its head. Two slog sweeps by Shankar, off the first two balls, sailed over the mid-wicket and square-leg ropes, and a gear was switched. The last ball, a short offering, was clubbed to the same part of the ground as the first one. A leg-bye for four off the previous delivery meant that the Titans earned 24 runs from the over.

Shankar finished with his second fifty of IPL 2023, and is currently second (199 runs), behind Shubman Gill, among Titans’ highest run-getters this season. Six games in, it’s already his best aggregate in an IPL season since 2019 (244 runs). The strike rate – 165.83 – is by far his best in a season.

Shankar’s knock was perfectly complemented by David Miller at the other end, who finished on an 18-ball 32. The two knocks, and Gill’s 49, trumped Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s 39-ball 81 and Andre Russell’s 19-ball 34, which took KKR to 179-7 in 20 overs.

KKR have won just one out of their last six games. GT, meanwhile, are at the top of the IPL points table, having won four out of their last five games. It was a return clash between the two sides after the first match ended in stunning fashion, when Rinku Singh clubbed five sixes in the last over in one of the all-time great IPL cameos.
