Watch: Suryakumar Yadav could not believe it when played the ball onto his stumps while attempting his famous lap shot against the Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Stadium yesterday (May 16).

Suryakumar Yadav came into IPL 2023 with a string of low scores. Mid-way through the season, however, he picked up form and has been back at his best, playing his trademark laps, sweeps, and wristy slices through the off-side.

Chasing a relatively steep 178 against Lucknow on a tricky surface last night, Mumbai’s hopes were pinned on him once again. Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan gave them a good start. Surya arrived at the crease with the score reading 90-1 after 9.4 overs.

Surya started his innings with a whip through mid-wicket for a couple of runs against Ravi Bishnoi, but could not get going immediately after. He failed to score off three of the next five balls, with Krunal Pandya and Bishnoi keeping a leash on his scoring.

At the 14-over point, Suryakumar was on seven off eight balls, and Mumbai needed 63 in six overs. Needless to say, both Surya and Mumbai needed to get a move on.

Lucknow gave the ball to Yash Thakur and Surya sensed his opportunity. He shaped up to play the lap shot with fine leg inside the circle, but moved too early. Sensing this movement, Thakur cut down the pace off the delivery, and bowled wide outside off stump.

Surya did well to still reach it, even as his body fell over to the off side. He even got a decent bat on it, but unfortunately for him, with his weight falling completely over to the offside, he could not control the direction of the shot.

He ended up hitting the ball straight onto his stumps, much to the delight of Thakur and Lucknow.

Such was his disbelief at missing out on what is a bread-and-butter shot for him that Surya sat beside the pitch for a while after the dismissal. It eventually ended up being a major moment in the match that Lucknow won by five runs. A few inches here or there, and that ball could have gone to the fine leg fence for four, and the result could have been different.
