Watch: Rashid Khan takes catch described by Virat Kohli as ‘one of the best catches’ he’s ever seen

Rashid Khan celebrates a wonderful catch

Rashid Khan produced a moment of magic in the field, taking a stunning diving catch to dismiss the dangerous, well-set Kyle Mayers in Gujarat Titans’ victory over Lucknow Super Giants today (May 7) at Ahmedabad.

Lucknow started well in response to Gujarat’s mammoth total of 227-2 from their 20 overs with openers Mayers and Quinton de Kock – the latter playing his first game of the 2023 IPL – both getting off to fast starts.

At the end of the powerplay the left-handed pair had taken Lucknow to 72-0 and ahead of the required run rate, having taken 14 runs off Rashid Khan’s first over and 19 off Mohammed Shami’s second.

Gujarat needed a breakthrough and they got one through the bowling of Mohit Sharma but thanks largely to the outstanding fielding of Rashid in the deep. Mayers attempted to pull a slower delivery that was dug into the pitch from Sharma but the West Indies batter didn’t get hold of it. Instead, he top-edged it into a vacant space deep in the leg-side. Rashid, who was stationed at deep fine leg, charged in and around before diving forward to take an outstanding catch.

Virat Kohli took to his Instagram account to praise the catch, writing: “One of the best catches I’ve ever seen. Brilliant.”

From there on Lucknow stuttered, in the end coming nowhere near Gujarat’s first innings total. The result saw defending champions Gujarat extend their lead at the top of the table with Lucknow remaining in third ahead of Rajasthan Royals’ clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad later in the day.
