Watch: Harpreet Brar finds big turn, pitches leg and hits off to continue dramatic Delhi Capitals collapse
Watch: Harpreet Brar cleaned up Manish Pandey with a zinging delivery which smashed into the top of off-stump as Delhi Capitals lost six wickets in four overs today (May 13).
Delhi were chasing 168 to win after Prabhsimran Singh scored his maiden T20 hundred for Punjab batting first. Delhi, placed at the bottom of the table, needed a big win at their home ground to keep their slim hopes of qualifying for the playoffs alive.
A good start pushed them to 65-0 off the first six overs of the chase. Then they collapsed spectacularly, thanks in no small part to Brar’s scintillating spell. He knocked over Phil Salt to break open the Delhi order, and dismissed Rilee Rossouw and David Warner in his next over.
The wickets of all three of Delhi’s star overseas batters now in his pocket, Brar went into his final over with figures of 3-27.
The real magic came off the first ball of his final over, however. Bowling from around the wicket to the right-handed Pandey, who was still on nought having faced two deliveries, he pitched the ball on leg stump and found prodigious turn.
The ball spun sharply past the outside edge of Pandey’s bat, crashing into off stump as the batter looked to work it into the leg side.
Brar’s fourth wicket also put him on a hat-trick, devastating Delhi’s chances of chasing the total. He conceded just three singles off the rest of his over and finished with figures of 4-30.
Delhi were unable to recover from their helter-Skelter collapse after the powerplay and went on to lose the match by 31 runs. They did, however, manage to bat out their overs, finishing on 136-8.
