by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: Nitish Rana smashed Umran Malik for six boundaries, including two sixes, during the quick’s first over against Kolkata Knight Riders today (April 14).

The KKR skipper walked out to bat after the team had collapsed to 20-3 in 3.3 overs in a run chase of 229. He made two runs in his first four deliveries before breaking the shackles when Malik came on to bowl, in the last over of the powerplay.

Malik, who had picked up 3-33 the last time the two teams met, started with a bouncer on the first ball of his innings, which was pulled away by Rana. The top edge managed to clear the short fine leg as Rana scored his first boundary of the day. He took on the short ball next, and easily pulled it away for a maximum to score ten runs off the first two deliveries.

Malik erred on the third ball, bowled at 150.4kph, which was hit over the deep mid-wicket boundary for a four. The next two balls were sent away for two more fours as Rana got off to a flier. The powerplay ended with Rana cutting away Malik for a six over backward point, as 28 runs came off the over.

Rana got to his fifty off just 25 deliveries and was dismissed for a 41-ball 75.
