Watch: ‘Absolutely plumb’ – Trent Boult takes out Virat Kohli for golden duck in replica of 2019 World Cup dismissal

Virat Kohli golden duck
by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: Virat Kohli was dismissed for a golden duck by Trent Boult, off the very first ball of the Royal Challengers Bangalore-Rajasthan Royals IPL 2023 match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Kohli, currently third on the Orange Cap list, was dismissed for his seventh golden duck in all T20s, falling only for the second time in single digits this season. It was also the 100th IPL wicket for Boult and the first time the left-armer had dismissed Kohli in T20s.

Off the very first ball of the match, Kohli – opening with Faf du Plessis – could do little as it pitched on length and seamed back in, hitting him plumb on the front foot. Boult went up in appeal straight away, and the umpire took no time in adjudging him out. Kohli did not bother to review it either, trudging off as the packed home ground was silenced in the first few minutes of the match. It was a wicket that instantly drew comparisons with Boult’s dismissal of Kohli in the 2019 World Cup semi-final.

It only got worse an over later, when Shahbaz Ahmed was dismissed by the same bowler, trying to pull him away but only finding Yashasvi Jaiswal in the inner circle.

The Rajasthan Royals are currently at the top of the points table, while RCB are sixth.
