Watch: Mumbai Indians needed 17 off the last over, but Tim David sealed the match with a six off each off the first three balls.

Batting first at the Wankhede Stadium, Rajasthan Royals rode on Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 62-ball 124 to post 212-7. After 19 overs, Mumbai were 196-4, with Tilak Varma (29 in 21 balls) and Tim David (27 in 11 at the crease).

Sanju Samson backed Jason Holder (3-0-37-0 at that point) over Yuzvendra Chahal (3-0-32-0) and Kuldeep Sen (1-0-20-0) for the last over. There was dew, but to quote Samson himself, “it was kind of wet, not that wet.” On another night, he might have backed Chahal.

Holder switched to round the wicket to deny David room. David responded by taking guard on off stump, taking the middle- and leg-stump line out of the equation.

Holder attempted a yorker on the off-stump and bowled a low full-toss. David went down on one knee, and probably did not middle it, but his brute force carried the ball over the straight boundary.

David now stood outside the crease, forcing Holder to alter his length. Holder, however, backed himself with the yorker, and ended up bowling another full-toss, higher than the previous one. This one cleared the deep mid-wicket boundary, forcing applause out of Sachin Tendulkar.

The third full-toss was the highest of the three, and the easiest to hit. This time David barely needed to move: he simply swung the bat to clear the deep mid-wicket fence.

In the 1000th match in IPL history, Mumbai Indians became the first team to chase a score in excess of 200 at the Wankhede Stadium.
