Watch: 18-year-old IPL newbie Shaik Rasheed holds on to stunning catch after slipping at the death

Chennai Super Kings youngster Shaik Rasheed took a stunning catch in the deep, managing to hold onto the ball and stay within the confines of the boundary despite slipping to account for the dangerous Jitesh Sharma in the final stages of his side’s game against Punjab Kings earlier today (April 30).

Though Rasheed ended up on the losing side – Zimbabwe all-rounder Sikandar Raza hit seven off the final three deliveries to take Punjab Kings over the line – his catch injected jeopardy into the closing moments of the match in Chennai.

With Punjab requiring 15 off nine deliveries, Jitesh skied a slower ball off Tushar Deshpande towards long on where Rasheed steadied himself to take the catch before tripping over, coming millimetres away from touching the boundary cushion. Had his foot come in contact with the cushion, the equation would have been reduced to nine off the final eight deliveries with the in-form Jitesh still at the crease; a wicket would have left Punjab needing 15 off eight with a new batter at the crease.

After several slow-motion replays, TV umpire Yeshwant Barde eventually concluded that Rasheed did not touch the cushion.

It was a memorable intervention from the teenage Rasheed, who was only on the field as a substitute fielder. Rasheed, 18, is yet to make his full IPL debut; the young batter was part of India’s 2022 Under-19 World Cup winning team scoring 50 in the final against England.
