Dhoni run out

Watch: CSK’s MS Dhoni rolled back the years to effect a fine run-out in IPL 2022, combining athleticism with a sharp sense of judgment to collect a Chris Jordan throw and send back Punjab Kings’ Bhanuka Rajapaksa.

Dhoni, who turns 41 this year, has looked in vintage form so far in the tournament, earning plaudits for his fine knock in the competition opener, his first IPL fifty since 2019. In the following game, he started his innings off with a six, the first time he had begun an IPL knock in such fashion.

Against Punjab Kings, he was in the thick of action early, this time as a wicketkeeper. The initial bit of effort came from bowler Jordan, who was quick to cover ground and receive a tap back from Rajapaksa, sprinting to one side to gather the ball and send the ball to the striker’s end.

The throw wasn’t exactly accurate from an off-balance Jordan, but Dhoni had already begun sprinting towards the stumps, realising that the striker’s end was unmanned. In a swift motion, he collected the ball and dived forward, getting an underarm throw out just in time to beat the returning Rajapaksa.

The Punjab-Chennai clash was Dhoni’s 350th T20 appearance, becoming the second Indian to the landmark after Rohit Sharma.
