Watch: Ishan Kishan hilariously loses track of ball after reverse sweep slowly rolls past him

by Wisden Staff 1 minute read

Watch: Wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan was left searching for the ball even as it comically rolled past him during an IPL 2022 clash between Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders.

MI and KKR, occupying the last two spots in the ongoing edition, faced off at the DY Patil Stadium on Monday. While the five-time champions have already been eliminated from the competition, KKR’s qualification chances are hanging by a thread. Despite a poor string of performances, the players could not help breaking into a smile after Mumbai wicketkeeper Kishan completely lost sight of the ball just as it quietly rolled beside him.

The fourth ball of the ninth over by left-arm spinner Kumar Kartikeya saw Nitish Rana go down on his knees to play a reverse sweep. The batter could only get a bottom edge, under-cutting the ball, which slowly rolled beside Kishan and towards the fielder behind. He turned around to search for the ball, completely clueless, even as it sneaked past him, allowing the KKR batters to take a single, much to the agony of Kartikeya.

Pommie Mbangwa, on commentary, was left amused at the incident, exclaiming, “It’s not gone 10 yards from him, and they’ve [batters] managed to scamper through for a single!”

The MI fielders too saw the funny side with Jasprit Bumrah, who eventually fielded the ball, allowing himself a smile at the comedy of errors, while Kishan broke into an embarrassing laugh as well.
