Four possible explanations for Jadeja pointing at ‘India Cements’ after CSK’s last ball win

Jadeja CSK
by Sankalp Srivastava 3-minute read

Ravindra Jadeja, the Chennai Super Kings all-rounder, became the talk of the town after pointing to ‘India Cements’ on the back of his kit after CSK’s thrilling last-ball win against Kolkata Knight Riders.

Jadeja walked in with CSK in need of 33 runs in 16 deliveries and scored a quickfire 11-ball-31, finishing the match in style with consecutive sixes off the last two deliveries and helping the franchise to their fifth win of the season. His celebration featured a gesture towards the dressing room where he pointed at ‘India Cements’ at the back of his kit.

But why did he do it? Here are four of our best guesses!

Wanted to give a shout out to the sponsor

It’s been a dismal season for Chennai Super Kings, their worst in IPL history. Maybe, Jadeja was just giving the sponsors a shout out for sticking with them through these tough times. It’s the first time they’ve missed out on a playoffs spot, and there are unconfirmed reports that there’s no mega auction planned ahead of the next IPL. CSK would then have to go again in 2021 with more or less the same bunch of players, which makes it all the more essential to keep the sponsors happy. If you know what we mean!

Forgot where his name was

This might have been a genuine mistake, to be fair. Probably the adrenaline, after finishing a tight game in style, got the better of him and he completely forgot that this was the IPL, and the sponsors get to have their names where the players usually have theirs.

Showing how he is India’s cement

Jadeja had the second-highest average among Indian batsmen at the World Cup last year (although he batted just once), having played a swashbuckling knock in the semifinal, soon after the famous ‘bits and pieces’ remark by Sanjay Manjrekar. He is also one of only five players to have made all three squads for India’s tour to Australia, leaving his confidence sky-high, as was apparent against KKR last night.

In the ongoing IPL also, Jadeja has been a hit with the bat, with 232 runs @46.40, and a strike-rate of 171.85. Maybe he was just pointing out how he could be ‘India’s cement’ in their batting line-up, apart from being their force with the ball. Just maybe.

Showing CSK’s position on the table

A little below the belt, this one. An anomaly of a season for CSK, the first time ever that they fail to qualify for the playoffs and everyone (including us) has been on their case. Jadeja, who dons the number eight kit for both India and CSK, was probably just pointing out the side’s position in the IPL points table, or the number of matches they’ve lost so far, and not, well, at ‘India Cements’.

Honestly, we can’t say for sure. Just hoping that Jaddu hasn’t had enough of our ‘verbal diarrhoea’ already!
