Shikhar Dhawan responds after being taunted for not using DRS review

Shikhar Dhawan, the in-form Delhi Capitals batsman, has responded after being teased by former India teammate Yuvraj Singh for not using the DRS review despite being dismissed with a seemingly wrong call during Qualifier 2 of IPL 2020.

Dhawan was cruising along to what would have been his third century of IPL 2020, and was at 78 off 49 balls, when he tried to cheekily take on seamer Sandeep Sharma with a standing reverse sweep. Adventurous as it was, Dhawan failed to put any bat on the full-toss, and the ball struck him high on the back pad, in front of the stumps. Dhawan started walking almost before the umpire raised his finger, convinced that the ball would have easily gone on to hit the stumps.

Replays, however, showed otherwise  – the impact of the delivery was outside the off-stump, and had Dhawan employed DRS, he would have survived.

“I am surprised that non-striker Shimron Hetmyer didn’t say anything,” Simon Doull, the on-air commentator, noted. “Shikhar himself might have realised … anyway, he didn’t”.

When asked about the decision after the innings, Hetmyer said: “I thought he was outside as well, but he just turned and walked, it was basically his decision really.”

As expected, Twitter was filled with comments trying to make sense of Dhawan’s decision not to use the available review. Yuvraj, Dhawan’s former teammate at Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), poked fun at the ‘man in form’ on Twitter for his absent-mindedness.

“@SDhawan25 man in form but naam to jatt ji hai. how bout drs bro? As usual must have forgotten, game on #DCvSRH”

Dhawan responded: “Hahahah pajhi mainu lag gya plumb hai tah muuh chuk chal paya jadh boundary tey pahuncha tadh pata lag gya [Hahahha, brother I thought it was plumb and I just started walking –  when I reached the boundary then I got to know it was not out]”.

The decision had little impact on the outcome of the game – DC still managed to post a healthy 189-3, which proved 17 runs too many for SRH.
