Watch: Bowler takes strange two-ball hat-trick in The 6ixty

by Wisden Staff 1 minute read

Watch: Trinbago Knight Riders’ Geetika Kodali recorded the first hat-trick of The 6ixty, off just two legal deliveries against Barbados Royals Women.

USA under-19 captain Kodali came to her team’s rescue in a crucial clash, completing the hat-trick after Trinbago Knight Riders had posted 92. Looking to win their first game of the women’s competition of The 6ixty, Hayley Jansen started off economically, conceding five runs in the first over. It was a Kodali show thereafter.

The right-arm quick dismissed Barbados Royals captain Hayley Matthews for two after the latter got a leading edge to Sheneta Grimmond at cover off the first ball of the second over. No.3 Britney Cooper tried to drive the next ball, but was bowled.

Kodali could have missed out on the hat-trick but for Kyshona Knight’s exquisite glovework. The next ball of the over was signalled a wide after it went down the leg-side. Knight, however, was quick to spot Chloe Tryon outside the crease as she had tried to play the ball and missed. She whipped out the bails, the decision was referred to the third umpire, and Kodali completed a hat-trick in two legal deliveries.

Trinbago Knight Riders went on to win by 29 runs, with Kodali finishing with figures of 2-0-6-3.

It is not the first time that a bowler has taken a hat-trick in two deliveries. Pravin Tambe of Rajasthan Royals had achieved the feat in 2014, against Kolkata Knight Riders. He had Manish Pandey stumped off a wide before removing Yusuf Pathan and Ryan ten Doeschate off the next two deliveries. Kaun Pravin Tambe?, his 2022 biopic, featured the feat.

However, Isuru Udana was the first to complete this strange accomplishment. He was playing for Wayamba against Central Districts in the Champions League T20 in 2010.
