Alastair Cook was not happy about being dismissed lbw twice by James Anderson in the County Championship last week, refuting the decisions in a hilarious message exchange with his former England teammate.

The ex-England captain was out for a duck in the second innings of Essex’s fixture against Lancashire, having fallen for 16 in the first innings. Anderson took five wickets in the match, including a first innings four-for in his first outing of the season.

On the Tailenders podcast, Anderson shared a message exchange with Cook from after the game had finished.

“Bearing in mind it’s now Monday morning, the game finished yesterday,” said Anderson. “He sent me a picture of a still of the ball, he said it’s just about to hit his pad, I’ve said that’s after you hit it. It’s absolutely dead.

“‘No it wasn’t, that’s before it hit me,’ So I said, ‘Okay I’ll get them to knock a wicket off my tally and give you an extra not out then.’ He was like, ‘Yes please and a public apology for excessive appealing’. So that’s where our conversation is at at the minute.”

Fellow podcast host Felix White chipped in to ask: “What do you think Jim, are they out? Do you think they’re both dead?”

“Close enough,” said Anderson with a smile.

The match in question ended in a draw after Lancashire declared on 351-7 on day four. Essex batted out the remaining overs and finished the day on 128-4.
