Watch: Jonny Bairstow Falls To Astonishing Wicketkeeper Catch Diving Past First Slip In County Championship
by Wisden Staff 15 minute read

Watch: Jonny Bairstow was out for 36 in his second match back for Yorkshire after his long injury lay-off, dismissed by a stunning leaping catch from Durham wicketkeeper, Ollie Robinson.

Yorkshire were 145-5 before Bairstow got out, in their second innings of a fast-paced match at Chester-le-Street. In the first innings of the game, Bairstow had become Bas de Leede’s first wicket in County Championship cricket after he was bowled by the Dutchman for 27.

In the second innings, Yorkshire were looking to build on a slim first innings lead before Matthew Potts and Ben Raine made hay, taking four wickets each. Bairstow looked to drive a ball wide of off-stump from Raine but got a thick outside edge.

The ball carried directly towards first slip, who was tracking the ball towards his hands. But as the ball continued to travel directly towards the fielder, Robinson leapt into action from behind the stumps.

The keeper dived full length in front of the the slip with his right arm outstretched, and plucked the ball out of the air before it reached the fielder. He then completed an aesthetically pleasing barrel roll out of shot of the camera, leaving the slip fielder still in position seemingly bemused as to how the ball was not in his own hands.

“He flew through the air like Superman there,” was the commentator’s summation of the event.
