Watch: England hopeful Matty Potts claimed a stunning seven-wicket haul to snatch a come-from-behind win for Durham against Glamorgan and advance his Test prospects ahead of New Zealand’s visit.

Potts is the leading wicket-taker across both divisions of the County Championship, with 35 wickets at an average of 18.57, and has taken four six-wicket hauls in six games, with his 7-40 against Glamorgan a career-best performance.

The game was an undulating one throughout, with Ben Stokes smashing 82 on the opening day to take Durham to 311, and Glamorgan’s Nos.8 and 9, Billy Root and Michael Neser, both hitting half-centuries to help their side take a lead having been 163-7, Potts the pick of the bowlers with four wickets.

Durham were only able to set Glamorgan 196 to win, with Neser taking four wickets to bowl out the Chester-le-Street-based side for 249, and although Potts claimed both openers in a fiery new-ball burst, the Welsh side look best placed to secure victory as they made their way to 65-2.

Marnus Labuschagne was nicked off by Ben Raine as Durham ended the day on a high, and on the fourth day, it was the Potts show. Kiran Carlson was ripped for a duck by a sharp, short ball, with Sam Northeast also edging behind and with Glamorgan 83-5, Durham were back in the contest.

Brydon Carse claimed two of the next three wickets to fall, with Root and Chris Cooke dismissed either side of Potts pinning David Lloyd lbw, leaving Durham needing two more wickets.

A nervy, 17-run stand was broken by Potts, who nailed first-innings half-centurion Neser with a yorker, before removing Michael Hogan’s off-stump with his next ball to spark Durham’s celebrations.

Bowling with sharp pace, and having displayed an ability to defy lifeless tracks this season, buzz has built around Potts as a potential Test cricketer. The Guardian reported before his seven-for that the right-armer was in the frame for a call-up, and Potts’ latest stellar showing will only bolster his claims.
