Watch: Controversial LBW call in Glamorgan-Yorkshire match sparks criticism

by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

Yorkshire all-rounder Jordan Thompson was given out in controversial circumstances in a County Championship clash against Glamorgan, with many suggesting the ball had pitched well outside leg.

In a low-scoring game, with every run vital, Thompson had scored 12 quick runs having come in at 78-6 in response to Glamorgan’s 149 all out. He was struck on the pad by a ball delivered by seamer Michael Hogan, with the right-armer coming over the wicket to the left-hander. It gave little margin for error for the ball to both pitch in line and be heading on to hit the stumps, but the umpire was convinced.

Plenty of others weren’t. Thompson shook his head repeatedly as he walked off the pitch in apparent displeasure at the decision, while Sky Sports commentator David ‘Bumble’ Lloyd also confirmed later in the broadcast that he felt the call was incorrect. “It looked as if it pitched outside leg,” he said. The game is being broadcast live on TV by Sky Sports.

There was criticism on social media, with the decision labelled “absolutely dreadful”, “embarrassing” and a “shocker” by various observers. Yorkshire still went on to carve out a healthy lead, with a half-century by England captain Joe Root proving crucial.
