Essex come into the South Group clash buoyant, having secured a tight two-wicket win over Kent in their opening game. Surrey were involved in a thriller of their own, albeit one dominated by Middlesex. They succumbed to a 190-run defeat late on the fourth day.

Essex were last summer’s County Championship winners, and have most of their squad available to them. Surrey are enduring an availabilty crisis, with 14 players out for this game. Six are on England duty, six injured, and two Kolpaks stuck overseas. They have signed Sussex’s Laurie Evans and Worcestershire’s Adam Finch on emergency loan deals.
