Botham’s Ashes: 40th anniversary dinners with Sir Ian

by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

This summer marks 40 years since Ian Botham secured his legacy as an England great with a series of virtuoso displays to help his country to Ashes glory.

With England 1-0 down in the series, the talismanic all-rounder swung the momentum of the series around in the third Test at Headingley with a staggering knock of 149 not out in a historic 18-run win. Botham then sparkled with the ball as the hosts went on to secure a 3-1 series win.

To celebrate that momentous series, The Sporting Club is staging four dinners at Headingley, Edgbaston, Old Trafford and The Oval, with members of that England team – including Botham – present. Sporting Club Owner Ian Stafford and David Gower, one of England’s greatest ever batsmen, will co-host the four dinners and funds will be raised for the Beefy Foundation.
