21 Questions: Andrew Flintoff

by Wisden Staff

Forget the South African jungle, Freddie takes on his toughest challenge yet with All Out Cricket’s 21 Questions.

Describe yourself in one word?
Thoughtful

Any words or phrases you overuse?
It’s got to be “I must admit”

What is your most marked characteristic?
The little black mark on the back of my head, everyone thought it was permanent black marker from my stag party

If you could edit your past, what would you change?
Nothing

What is your idea of happiness?
Sitting at home with the kids and all the family

Who would you like to play you in a film of your life?
John Candy! With Rodney Trotter for the teenage years, Macaulay Culkin for the early years and with my current haircut, Emili Sandé

What is the trait you most deplore in others?
Rudeness, I can’t stand it. It’s just common decency, like acknowledging someone who has let you out in traffic

Which living person do you most admire and why?
My dad, he brought me up and he worked hard

What would be your fancy dress costume of choice?
I’ve never had the chance to go to a fancy dress party, if I could, I’d definitely go as Brian Potter from Phoenix Nights

What has been your biggest disappointment?
It has to be the 2006/07 Ashes series. Wasn’t great, was it?

What’s your favourite joke?
What’s Doctor Who’s favourite bread? Dalek bread

Most important lesson life has taught you?
You’ve got to be humble

What becomes of the broken hearted?
Misery

What’s wrong with the world?
A lot! Everyone needs to chill out and make time for each other

In which era would you most like to have lived?
I’m enjoying this one at the moment, but I’d like to have seen some dinosaurs

If you were an animal, what would you be and why?
Giraffes. I love them. Plus Lanky [Lancashire’s mascot] is a giraffe. I once managed to convince Murali that [former Lancs chief exec] Jim Cumbes was Lanky

What is the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen?
My wife or a giraffe!

Who is your favourite fictional hero?
I’m a big Star Wars fan. I started off as a fan of Luke Skywalker, but as you grow older you get drawn towards the dark side…

Most overrated virtue?
I’m not sure if it’s a virtue, but taking the positives. When you get beaten you always say you need to ‘take the positives’ and sometimes there aren’t any!

What if God was one of us?
He is

What came first, the chicken or the egg?
I think the egg… No! The chicken. We started from single-celled organisms and evolved, I don’t think we would have evolved into an egg
