Watch: Rohit Sharma fools crowd and commentators with fake DRS review

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: India captain Rohit Sharma fooled the Oval crowd on Thursday as he faked a review during the World Test Championship final against Australia.

There was a huge LBW appeal against Alex Carey after Mohammed Shami pinned nipped a ball back into his pads on the second morning, but umpire Chris Gaffney was unmoved.

With the crowd urging him to send it to the third umpire, Sharma made the ‘T’ sign with his arms, but opted not to review at the last minute as he did not touch his hands together while sharing a laugh with his team.

Gaffney seemed less than impressed with the gag, as he shook his head at the Indian captain after the incident.

“This is interesting, because he clearly made the signal,” said Harsha Bhogle on commentary, also taken in by Sharma’s antics. “I thought the time was on too at that time.”

“Oh, he’s just fooling around!” he then added after realising what Rohit was up to. “Well done Rohit!”

It came in a much-improved morning session for India that saw them take more wickets than they managed on the entirety of day one.

Travis Head was the first to go as he gloved a short ball from Mohammed Siraj through to the wicketkeeper. Cameron Green followed to Shami three overs later before Steve Smith chopped on to Shardul Thakur after bringing up his hundred earlier in the day.

When Mitchell Starc was brilliantly run out by sub fielder Axar Patel, Australia had lost 4-41 and opened up a game they had looked well in control of.

Pat Cummins’ side went to lunch 422-7, with the captain unbeaten on 2 alongside Alex Carey on 22.
