Watch: ‘Ibiza chill’ – Anaesthetised Mark Wood rambles hilariously in hospital bed following elbow surgery

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: Mark Wood was seen hilariously muttering gibberish under the influence of anaesthesia after undergoing an elbow surgery.

The England quick walked off midway through the first England-West Indies Test after suffering a right elbow injury and successfully underwent surgery for the same last week, removing bone and scar tissues to “address an impingement problem that was causing pain in his elbow when bowling”, according to a statement by the ECB. The injury and the subsequent surgery ruled Wood out of IPL 2022 as well, where he had been signed up by Lucknow Super Giants after being bought in the 2022 mega-auction.

Wood, known for his sense of humour, recently displayed his witty self while doing an air-hug after missing out from England’s huddle during the first Test against Windies, has now shared a bunch of videos on his social media accounts as he comes out of anaesthesia after his surgery, talking some “absolute rubbish.”

Wood’s caption read: “No more boney fragments in my arm! Thanks to Professor Roger van Riet and Mr Ali Noorani for sorting me out and all the staff who made me feel totally at ease.

“Langers, the England physio videoed me coming out of the anaesthetic – Bah, I talk some absolute rubbish!!!”

During the clip that he shared, Wood, under the influence of anasthesia, can be heard saying: “We all got shaky legs, shaky legs like Elvis Presley” and randomly mutters the words “pace and bounce” and “milky, milky”. He then proceeds to ask the nurse if he had been “anxious”, to which she replies, “You’ve been super chill.”  Wood picks on her words and says,  “I am chill, Ibiza chill’ as there is laughter in the background. He follows it with “I have not been to Ibiza.”

In the next clip, Wood asks, “Is my shoulder a little bit sore? That’s weird, though, I’ve had elbow surgery but my shoulder’s aching”, to which someone in the room replies by saying “Yeah, the position you were lying in.” Wood, at this point, gives a disgruntled look, saying “Whatever, I will still bowl fast.”

On being asked if he is looking forward to his IPL comeback, Wood says, “Yeah, I’m so sad” and then says of Lucknow’s head coach “I like Andy Flower, he’s a nice man.”

He then proceeds to hum “lollipop, lollipop” and utters a few more inaudible words before a nurse breaks him off.
