‘Barbados or Australia?’ – England suffer horror collapse against West Indies

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

England’s tour of the Caribbean got off to a disastrous start as they lost the first T20I against the West Indies by nine wickets.

After West Indies captain Kieron Pollard sent England in to bat, England lost their top and middle order batters in a hurry, collapsing spectacularly to 49-7 at one stage before a lower-order rescue act – led by Chris Jordan – helped them to a total beyond 100.

Their final score of 103 was their lowest in men’s T20I cricket since 2014. England’s latest batting collapse this winter drew a number of reactions from fans and experts.

There were those who wondered if the England side had ever left Australia.

Others lamented the fact that the change in format wasn’t able to lift team spirits, despite only one player featuring in both the Ashes and the West Indies series.

England’s last win in an international encounter came during the group stage of the T20 World Cup.

And there were also people who took a cheeky dig at those criticising England’s white-ball setup for their Ashes fiasco.

On the other hand, it was a good day to be a supporter of West Indies.
