Wisden’s West Indies-Australia team of the T20I series

Australia West Indies T20I
by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

Powered by their big-hitting batsmen and some tight bowling and fielding, West Indies eased to a 4-1 win over Australia in the five-match T20I series. Here’s a combined team of the series with players from either side.

Evin Lewis

3 matches, 110 runs @ 36.66, SR: 220.00, HS: 79

West Indies had a new star in every game, and Lewis’ belligerence formed the backdrop of their win in the fifth T20I. He raced to a 23-ball fifty and ended with 34-ball 79, helping set a 200- run target that was beyond Australia’s reach. In the previous game, he played a fine cameo of 31 off 14 balls.

Aaron Finch

5 matches, 127 runs @ 25.40, SR: 122.11, HS: 53

Along with Mitchell Marsh, Finch was the only other Australian who had a decent outing with the bat. Thrice he crossed 30, with his fifty in the fourth T20I being a crucial element in their solitary win. On two occasions, his stay was truncated by Fabian Allen’s fielding brilliance.

Mitchell Marsh

5 matches, 219 runs @ 43.80, HS: 75; 8 wickets @ 11.00, ER: 6.76, BBI: 3-24

While his teammates struggled, Marsh shone bright with both bat and ball. He comfortably led the run charts, scoring three fifties, and also picked up 8 wickets @ 11.00, the most by an Australian in the series.

Lendl Simmons

4 matches, 165 runs @ 33.00, SR: 122.22, HS: 72

The makeshift wicketkeeper in this XI, Simmons chipped in with useful scores throughout the series, but his best came during a 48-ball 78. The fine knock couldn’t prevent West Indies’ only loss in the series.

Andre Russell

5 matches, 107 runs @ 53.50, SR: 198.14, HS: 51; 6 wickets @ 22.16, ER: 9.50, BBI: 3-43

Russell was in his typically fiery mode with the bat, ending with a series strike-rate of 198.14, despite being silenced by Mitchell Starc’s last-over brilliance in the fourth game. Unsurprisingly, Russell’s tally of 11 sixes was the joint-highest. He was also the hosts’ second-highest wicket-taker.

Fabian Allen

5 matches, 4 wickets @ 33.00, ER: 7.33, BBI: 2-24

It was hard to ignore Allen after two screamers on the field. Beyond his fielding brilliance, Allen was more than handy with the ball, picking up four wickets while keeping the run-rate under check. His late-order burst in the fourth T20I almost took West Indies home.

Mitchell Starc

4 matches, 1 wicket @ 141.00, ER: 8.81, BBI: 1-15

That Starc managed to get in despite giving away 89 runs in the first two matches speaks of his impressive turnaround, highlighted by the last-over brilliance against Andre Russell, where he defended 11 runs.

Hayden Walsh Jr

5 matches, 12 wickets @ 11.66, ER: 7.00, BBI: 3-23

West Indies’ standout performer with the ball, Walsh Jr regularly tormented Australia’s middle order, beginning with his 3-23 in the first T20I that turned the game around. He took two more three-wicket hauls, ending with the most wickets from either camp.

Adam Zampa

5 matches, 4 wickets @ 7.94, ER: 7.94, BBI: 2-20

Zampa just about gets in, compensating for three wicketless spells with two wickets apiece in the last two T20Is. Australia’s premier white-ball spinner bowled two neat spells in the final two games, keeping the run-rate under check while making regular dents on the West Indies batting.

Josh Hazlewood

4 matches, 4 wickets @ 29.00, ER: 7.73, BBI: 3-12

His spell in the first T20I plays a big part in Hazlewood’s inclusion here: with figures of 4-1-12-3, his Test lengths seemed just as effective, but he lost his sheen thereafter. In his last two games, he managed only listless figures of 0-33 and 0-32.

Obed McCoy

2 matches, 5 wickets @ 7.00, ER: 7.00, BBI: 4-26

McCoy played just the two games, but played a key role with his four-wicket haul in the low-scoring opener. His four-wicket haul fetched him the Player of the Match award, and he picked up another wicket in his one-over spell in the third game, after which he was rested due to injury.
