Watch: Kyle Mayers recreates ‘greatest shot ever’ contender, delivers trademark, high-elbow, back-foot six off Sam Curran

by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

Watch: Lucknow Super Giants opener Kyle Mayers hit stand-in Punjab Kings captain Sam Curran for an astonishing six.

KL Rahul strode out with Mayers in a home match, at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, after Curran opted to bowl.

Mayers dispatched Matthew Short for six over square-leg in the first over. In the second, Rahul found a boundary off Arshdeep Singh, while the pair hit a four apiece in the third, off Kagiso Rabada.

Curran himself came to bowl at this point, and conceded three singles off his first five balls. The last ball was both short and wide, and Mayers stayed back to play an incredible lofted shot off the back-foot over the off-side for six.

Mayers had been there, done that before, during a Twenty20 International against Australia at the Carrara Oval last October. On that occasion he hit Cam Green for a near-identical six: the ball had travelled 105 metres – significantly more than the 64 metres he managed in Lucknow.

Mayers eventually fell for a 21-ball 29 with three sixes, and Deepak Hooda followed soon, for two. At the time of writing, Lucknow are 78-2 in 10.3 overs, with Rahul on 39 and Krunal Pandya on seven.
