In their Super 12 match of the T20 World Cup 2022, India had rattled along to 173-2 after 19.5 overs against the Netherlands at the Sydney Cricket Ground. One box that was still to be ticked, though, was Suryakumar’s fifty. When Logan van Been bowled the final ball of the innings, he shuffled across his stumps, sized up the length, and whipped it over the fine leg fence. In the process, he reached his tenth T20I fifty, with this half-century coming off 25 balls.

Kohli, who had the best seat in the house, could not control his excitement, and immediately rushed over to Suryakumar. After engulfing him in a warm embrace, Kohli raised his arms to applaud his teammate’s innings. Kohli (62 not out in 44 balls) and Suryakumar (51 not out in 25) played key roles as India saw off Netherlands’ challenge to pile 179-2.

In response, Netherlands finished on 123-9, with no one going past 20. Suryakumar was named Player of the Match.
