Watch: ‘He watched it in slow-motion’ – Quinton de Kock stands frozen as ball rolls onto stumps in freak T20 World Cup dismissal

by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

Quinton de Kock’s T20 World Cup campaign got off to an unfortunate, bizarre start, with the opener standing and watching as the ball rolled onto his stumps in South Africa’s first game against Australia.

Josh Hazlewood began in exemplary fashion, taking the wicket of dangerman Rassie van der Dussen with his first ball and conceding just one run in his first two overs, but there was a hint of fortune to his second wicket.

De Kock, having been tied down to begin with, attempted his customary release shot, taking a step across and aiming a flick over short fine leg. The ball missed his bat and struck his pad, however, looping up in the air.

The South Africa wicketkeeper appeared to lose sight of the ball for a moment, while also deliberating a quick single. In the end, however, he could only watch on in horror, transfixed as the ball followed its high arc before bouncing into the stumps. Had self-preservation been the only thing on de Kock’s mind, he would surely have stayed in place and kicked or batted the ball away. As it was, he was forced to depart for 7.
