England Women’s fast bowler Kate Cross spotted the comical moment, with the host broadcaster showing a slo-mo shot of the vigorous and inaccurate celebratory slap. Hasaranga seemed unharmed, laughing as he reached his hands up to protect himself.

The run out itself was a potentially crucial one. It left England 14-3 and feeling nervy chasing 74, with Root out for one having hit a double century in the first innings. The tourists eventually made it to stumps without further loss, reaching 38-3 and needing another 36 runs to win the first Test at Galle.
