Keshav Maharaj was stretchered off with an injury sustained while celebrating the wicket of Kyle Mayers on day four of the second test between South Africa and the West Indies.

Maharaj has been taken to hospital for an MRI scan for what appears to be an Achilles injury. The wicket was his second of the day and took the Proteas a step closer to securing a comfortable 2-0 series victory.

The left-arm spinner returned to the side as South Africa picked two spinners for the test at the Wanderers, a decision that seems to be justified with victory just two wickets away. He picked up the wicket of Alzarri Joseph in the first innings before bowling Roston Chase for a duck in the second innings.

On the stroke of lunch, he then hit Mayers on the pads. It was initially given not out before being overturned on review. Injury struck as the spinner began to celebrate the three reds as they appeared on the big screen.

The extent of the injury is currently unknown, but it remains to be seen whether he can participate in the ODI series against the West Indies which starts on Thursday.

Maharaj’s availability as the overseas player for Middlesex in the County Championship is also in doubt with the season starting in less than a month.
