Marks out of 10: Player ratings for India after their ODI series defeat to South Africa

by Divy Tripathi 4 minute read

The ODI series between South Africa and India ended in a 3-0 series win for the hosts. We take a look at how each of India’s players fared during the series.

KL Rahul: 4/10

76 runs @ 25.33, HS 55, one fifty

The Karnataka batter didn’t have the best of series in his first as ODI captain. He decided to open the innings, a move which didn’t work out well.

Shikhar Dhawan: 7/10

169 runs @ 56.33, HS 79, two fifties

The Delhi opener impressed, getting a start in each of the game and keeping the India chase alive in partnerships with Virat Kohli in the first and third ODIs.

Virat Kohli: 6/10

116 runs @ 38.66, HS 65, two fifties

Virat Kohli didn’t disappoint in his first series since he was removed from the ODI captaincy. However, he couldn’t quite capitalise on his good starts to get India beyond the finish line.

Rishabh Pant: 5.5/10

101 runs @ 33.66, HS 85, one fifty

Almost all of these marks belong to that spectacular knock that Pant played in the second ODI, for he disappointed in the other two matches of the series. His blistering innings in the second ODI, and first-ball dismissal in the third ODI showcased his ‘live by the sword, die by the sword’ philosophy.

Shreyas Iyer: 2/10

54 runs @ 18, HS 26

A disappointing series for Iyer who failed in what was been a good opportunity for him to cement a place in the ODI side.

Suryakumar Yadav: 7/10

39 runs @ 39, HS 39

Suryakumar featured in the third ODI and added some initiative to the chase when India were up against it.

Venkatesh Iyer: 2/10

24 runs @ 12, zero wickets

The Madhya Pradesh player was brought in as the all-rounder who should have been the side’s sixth bowler but was bowled for only five overs in the series. He failed to impress with the bat as well.

Ravichandran Ashwin: 3/10

32 runs @ 32, one wicket @ 121

Not a great series for Ashwin in his first ODI outings in five years.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar: 3/10

0 wickets

Kumar was expensive and wicketless in his two games.

Shardul Thakur: 6/10

1 wicket @ 107, 90 unbeaten runs

Shardul didn’t do too well in his primary role but batted with tenacity and intent, scoring runs at a strike-rate of 111.11.

Deepak Chahar: 8/10

2 wickets @ 26.5, 54 unbeaten runs

The Rajasthan bowler impressed with the ball providing India two early breakthroughs in the form of Janneman Malan and Aiden Markram in Cape Town. He was also spectacular with the bat hitting a wonderful half-century during the run chase to keep it alive.

Jayant Yadav: 5/10

0 wickets, 2 runs @ 2

The off-spinner replaced Ashwin for the final ODI and was wicketless in a reasonably economical spell.

Prasidh Krishna: 6/10

3 wickets @ 19.66, BBI 3-59

Picked for the third ODI and was able to get some wickets towards the end of South Africa innings.

Yuzvendra Chahal: 5/10

2 wickets @ 73.5, BBI 1-47

Chahal bowled with a decent economy rate but got only two wickets in three ODIs.

Jasprit Bumrah: 7.5/10

5 wickets @ 27.4, BBI 2-48

India’s premier bowler was the pick of his team’s bowling attack. He impressed in circumstances where other bowlers struggled, and was the highest wicket-taker for his side.
