Billy The Trumpet to retire from Barmy Army duty

by Ben Gardner 2 minute read

Billy Cooper, trumpeter for the Barmy Army and known as Billy The Trumpet, has nearly tooted his last, with his touring duties to come to an end at the conclusion of England’s ongoing Test series in South Africa.

The famous travelling group’s musician has been a fixture of England tours for 16 years but has decided to step back from Barmy Army duties to spend more time with his family. Former England captain Michael Vaughan praised his contribution to English cricket.

“One of England’s best players retires this week,” tweeted Vaughan. “Well done on a fantastic career. You won’t know how many wickets you have taken but I can say it’s plenty. Thanks for all the support and creating an amazing atmosphere for many many years.”

Cooper and his trumpet made headlines in 2017 after becoming separated, with the former leaving the latter on a train, prompting a social media campaign in aid of a reunion. Musician and instrument were brought together again soon after.
