Watch: Water carriers Siraj and Kuldeep hilariously signal ‘out’ behind umpire during DRS review

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: Running onto the field with drinks, Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav hilariously signalled ‘out’ behind the on-field umpire J Madangopal, who was waiting to signal the final verdict after a DRS review during the second T20I against Sri Lanka.

The fifth ball of the 10th over, bowled by Yuzvendra Chahal, saw Charith Asalanka miss a sweep, with the ball keeping low. Seemingly plumb in front of the wicket, Madangopal signalled out, but Asalanka requested a review. Ball-tracking showed three reds, with India claiming their second wicket of the night. However, there was a slight delay in the third umpire passing his decision to the on-field umpires, but with India assured of a wicket, as TV replays suggested, early celebrations began, led by water carriers Siraj and Kuldeep.

Before joining the rest of the India fielders, Siraj first and then Kuldeep came up behind an unaware Madangopal, and raised their fingers to signal ‘out’ before running away towards their teammates. Madangopal eventually raised his finger to send back Asalanka for a 5-ball two after receiving a confirmation from the third umpire, but little did he know that Siraj and Kuldeep had already declared him out, albeit unofficially, before his signal.

Sri Lanka, who trail the three-match series 0-1, posted 183-5 on the board, courtesy of a quick 19-ball 47* from skipper Dasun Shanaka.
