Watch: ‘This sums up Sri Lanka today’ – Visitors miss run out chance after Shami, Jadeja stranded at one end

by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

Watch: A comedy of errors resulted in Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammad Shami escaping a run-out, after a chaotic mix-up between the two batters was followed by confusion between Sri Lanka fielders, ensuring that the duo survived the close call.

Off the second ball of the 125th over, Jadeja gently pushed a delivery by Vishwa Fernando towards the mid-wicket region and hurried for a quick single. India were already at 529-8, and the batters were looking for some quick runs. They tried to steal a second run, but Jadeja soon realised that the fielder had collected the ball. He signalled Shami to return, but the fast bowler had already run halfway down the track.

Luckily for him though, Dhananjaya de Silva, had a go at the non-striker’s end instead, and Fernando, who was seemingly unaware of Shami’s situation, ended up breaking the stumps with Jadeja comfortably back. Shami, meanwhile, got time to scamper back to safety at the other end, even as other Sri Lanka fielders were seen indicating that the run-out attempt had been made at the wrong end.

Ajit Agarkar, the on-air commentator during the incident, was heard saying: “I think sums up Sri Lanka today. Both batsmen stranded at the one end. Fumbles the ball, he’s not seen that Mohammed Shami is at his end as well. As easy an opportunity that you’ll get.”
