The Proteas will begin their T20I assignment just days after the 2022 edition of IPL gets over. The final of the Indian domestic league will culminate on 29th May, meaning that a fair chunk of South Africa’s biggest stars will be well-versed with the conditions. India are currently the top-ranked team in the ICC T20I men’s rankings and are yet to lose a game under Rohit Sharma in the shortest format.
South Africa, meanwhile, are ranked fifth, and have not played a T20I since the 2021 T20 World Cup. However, they enjoyed success against India in the recent home Tests and ODIs. Overall, India have won nine out of 15 T20Is against South Africa, while the Proteas have won six.
The five-match T20I series is expected to play a crucial role as both sides build towards the T20 World Cup in Australia. India and South Africa failed to make the semi-finals during the 2021 iteration and would be looking to zero in on their ideal combination before the global event. The five matches will be held across 11 days: the rubber will begin in Delhi on June 9th before the teams travel to Cuttack. Vishakhapatnam, Rajkot, and eventually Bengaluru.
