Watch: There was a moment of humour on a dark day for England fans, with Joe Root hit in the groin by a wayward throw from Virat Kohli and responding in comical fashion.

Root had made his way to 24 not out as the top order collapsed around him, continuing the theme of England’s winter with the bat. He played a ball gently into the off-side where his opposite number fielded the ball at point, throwing the ball back towards the stumps.

However, wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant was impeded from trying to collect the ball by the England captain standing in his crease, and the ball bounced up and struck Root in his groin. The right-hander staggered away, exclaiming, “Virat, come on man” in mild displeasure.

A glove punch later and the issue was resolved.
