England lowest scores

England’s quest to regain their series lead at Ahmedabad got off to a disastrous start, as they were bowled out for 112 as India’s spinners ripped through the visitors’ top order for the second Test in a row.

Here’s a look at England’s five lowest first innings scores away from home this century, you might sense a pattern developing:

58 v New Zealand, Auckland, 2018

“We’ve had a shocker.” England’s official Twitter account summed up their side’s struggles rather aptly. Having been inserted into bat by Kane Williamson’s New Zealand in a day/night Test at Auckland, England were blown away by the new ball pair of Trent Boult and Tim Southee, who shared all 10 England wickets.

At 27-9, it could have been a whole lot worse. But thankfully for England, Craig Overton struck an unbeaten 33 from No. 9 to take his team over the 50-run mark. New Zealand responded with a total of 427-8 declared.

77 v West Indies, Bridgetown, 2019

A year later, England got another overseas tour off to the worst possible start. After West Indies posted a first innings score of 289, Kemar Roach ran through England’s middle-order, taking figures of 5-17 as England succumbed for just 77. Keaton Jennings, who was dropped for the next Test of the series, actually top-scored for England with 17.

West Indies chose not to enforce enforce the follow-on and quickly fell to 120-6, before Shane Dowrich and Jason Holder put on an unbeaten 295 for the seventh wicket.

81 v Sri Lanka, Galle, 2007

Another instance where the opposition scored 400, while England could only a muster up a two-digit score. A Mahela Jayawardene double hundred lifted Sri Lanka to a total of 499-8 declared before Sri Lanka’s seamers, led by Chaminda Vaas, reduced England 33-6. Paul Collingwood and Ryan Sidebottom offered a period of resistance before Muttiah Muralitharan and Chanaka Welegedara ran through the tail.

With the help of some rain, England escaped from the Test with a draw.

112 v India, Ahmedabad, 2021

Just one Test after their mauling at Chennai (see below), England’s batsmen struggled yet again at the hands of Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel. Were it not for Zak Crawley’s confident 53, it could have been a whole lot worse.

134 v India, Chennai, 2021

England went into the second Chennai Test on a real high after their victory in the series opener, their sixth successive victory in Asia. They were quickly brought down to earth on a surface that took considerable turn from day one, though there were no complaints about the pitch from the visitors.

In truth, they were loose with the ball on the first day as India, thanks largely to Rohit Sharma’s 161, scored 329 – a total well above par. In response, England were 39-4 by lunch on the second day in an innings that never really got going as Ravichandran Ashwin took 5-43. Only Ben Foakes (42*) and Ollie Pope (22) passed 20 for England.
