Jasprit Bumrah misses out on his 100th wicket after failing to appeal for an LBW

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Jasprit Bumrah, who is primed to become the fastest quick from India to take 100 Test wickets, missed out on his opportunity despite pinning Moeen Ali in front of the wickets during the 60th over of the England first innings in the fourth ongoing Test at The Oval.

On the fifth ball of the over, Bumrah had Ali in all sorts of trouble with a yorker that headed towards the toes of the batsman. Though Ali managed to get his front foot out of the way eventually, replays suggested that it was toe-first, with ball-tracking showing three reds.

With none of the India players going up in appeal, the on-field umpire did not send in his verdict either.

Ali was batting on 14 at that time, with England still five runs behind India’s 191. The left-hander managed to pile on 21 more runs and stitched together a vital stand with Ollie Pope.

Bumrah currently has 99 Test wickets in just 24 games and needs one more wicket in the match to become the fastest Indian fast bowler to 100 wickets. Kapil Dev, who picked up 100 Test wickets in 25 games, currently holds the record.
