Watch: North Zone fast bowler Mayank Yadav knocked Rahul Tripathi’s middle stump out of the ground during a Prof. DB Deodhar Trophy 2023 match.

North Zone captain Nitish Rana opted to bat at in the Deodhar Trophy – the zonal 50-over domestic tournament in India – at the Cricket Association Puducherry Siechem Ground.

All eight North Zone batters reached double figures as they posted 259-6. Of them, the Ranas – Himanshu and Nitish – got 54 apiece, while Shubham Rohilla remained unbeaten on a 52-ball 56. For West Zone, Shams Mulani claimed 3-29.

Rahul Tripathi arrived in the sixth over after Rishi Dhawan got West Zone captain Priyank Panchal. He was batting on three when Mayank Yadav ran in to bowl at him.

Mayank, who turned 21 in June, had been picked up by the Lucknow Super Giants at the IPL 2023 auction, but he did not get a game. He was, however, in form in the Deodhar Trophy, picking up 1-41, 3-47, and 4-63 in the three matches before this.

He pitched the ball just short of a length, a shade outside the off stump. Tripathi attempted a pull, but the ball jagged back in and knocked the middle stump out of the ground.

Tripathi walked back, following scores of 15 and 2 with 3. In his next match, against East Zone, he fell for a duck. Mayank, on the other hand, went on to claim 3-21 against North-East Zone.

In the match in question, West Zone were soon reduced to 122-4 despite wicketkeeper Harvik Desai’s 56 at the top. However, Shivam Dube (83 not out) and Kathan Patel (63 not out) saw them home with seven balls and six wickets in hand.

South Zone will face East Zone in the final on August 3.
