Watch: Hassan Ali tries to leave, picks up runs with bizarre periscope shot deflection in the County Championship
Watch: Hassan Ali picked up runs in bizarre fashion in the latest round of the County Championship, attempting to leave the ball but making connection with his bat vertically in the air.
Tha Pakistan bowler is playing for Warwickshire this season, and has already made an impact with the ball. He picked up eight wickets across the first two rounds of competition, before pinning Ollie Pope in the first innings of this round’s fixture against Surrey.
With the bat, he was dismissed lbw for a golden duck in Warwickshire’s first innings against Surrey, as they were bowled out for 150. In the second innings, Warwickshire were also in trouble when he came to the crease, at 69-7.
He faced up to a short delivery from Jordan Clark and ducked in an attempt to leave. However, he left his bat straight upright like a periscope outside his off stump, the ball making connection with the blade. Hassan appeared to have no idea where the ball had gone when he felt the connection, standing up and looking around until he saw the ball running away into the leg side.
Ed Barnard at the non-striker’s end had the presence of mind to call for a single, but was already halfway down the pitch by the time Hassan had worked out where the ball was. He turned around, looking startled at the prospect of being run out, and sprinted down the pitch to complete the run.
Hassan was dismissed for 15 shortly afterwards, and Warwickshire collapsed to 141 all-out. Surrey took the victory by a nine-wicket margin.
