by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: Mohammad Abbas ended with figures of 4-22 in Somerset’s second innings to hand Hampshire an innings win in the first round of the 2022 County Championship.

Abbas was at his sensational best at the Ageas Bowl as he helped bowl out Somerset for only 135 in their second innings on Saturday in a clinical victory for Hampshire.

After Somerset hit 180 in their first innings, Hampshire replied with a total of 428, leaving the visitors trailing by 248 runs. In the Somerset’s second innings, openers Ben Green and Tom Lammonby began cautiously to put on 50 for the first wicket, but James Fuller removed the pair and No.3 Tom Abell, while Kyle Abbott and Keith Barker accounted for James Hildreth and Lewis Goldsworthy respectively.

Abbas struck from the very first ball after lunch on day three, forcing Steven Davies to edge to Liam Dawson, who was stationed at second slip. In his very next over, the Pakistan quick got the ball to sneak past Roelof van der Merwe’s attempted drive to rattle the stumps, leaving Somerset reeling at 92-6. Abbas then picked up Peter Siddle’s wicket before bowling Marchant de Lange to wrap up a fine victory by an innings and 113 runs.

Abbas had earlier picked up 2-28 in Somerset’s first innings. This is Abbas’ second year at the club; he took 41 Championship wickets in 2021 for Hampshire.
