Watch: Two Aussie screamers derail India’s chase

by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

Steve Smith and Moises Henriques took a pair of blinding catches to give Australia the upper hand as India embarked on a tall chase in the second ODI between the sides.

The tourists faced a tough ask, set 390 to win in order to keep the series alive, but made a strong start to their pursuit. Mayank Agarwal and Shikhar Dhawan gave India a brisk start before Shreyas Iyer joined Virat Kohli to take the score past 150 inside 23 overs.

Iyer looked particularly fluent, scoring at above a run a ball, but though he timed the 36th ball he faced just as well as the first 35, his hard-struck pull shot off Henriques was intercepted by an airborne Smith at midwicket. The former Australia captain was fresh off his second 62-ball hundred in two innings, and looked pumped up, hurling the ball to the ground, with his expression more one of anger than joy.

India seemed undeterred, with KL Rahul partnering Kohli in another brisk partnership. The latter looked in an ominous mood, seemingly set on bringing up his 71st international hundred and equalling Ricky Ponting’s mark as he moved past 80.

Instead, he was dismissed by another piece of fielding brilliance. Looking to attack Josh Hazlewood, another firmly hit cross-batted stroke was again stopped on its way to the boundary by a diving Australian. Henriques turned from bowler to catcher, horizontal to the ground as he plucked a stunner.

That left India 225-4, still needing another 165 to win.
