Watch: Cameron Green’s ‘lucky’ grab to bring unceremonious end to Virat Kohli’s year

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: India suffered a collapse of epic proportions in the second innings of the Adelaide Test against Australia, sliding from  9-1 overnight to ending their innings at 36-9 – their lowest ever Test total – with Virat Kohli being the sixth to fall thanks to a ‘lucky’ grab from Cameron Green.

Jasprit Bumrah departed first, falling to Pat Cummins, who then removed Cheteshwar Pujara to reduce India to 15-3. Josh Hazlewood, in his first over of the day, dismissed both Mayank Agarwal and Ajinkya Rahane in similar fashion to worsen India’s condition. And it was Cummins who then delivered the body blow, picking up the all-important wicket of Kohli, who had begun counterattacking.

The India captain went for a cover drive, but only managed an outside edge, which flew to Cameron Green at gully, who nearly fumbled what seemed a straightforward chance. The Australians began celebrating, but Kohli stood his ground.

The third umpire was asked to check the legitimacy of the catch, and the replays showed no conclusive evidence that the ball had touched the ground. Green seemed to grasp the chance, but it bobbed out his hands and into his body as he fell on his dive. Thankfully for Green, the ball rolled back down his arm, and into his hands.

“Good composure from Cameron Green, because these aren’t easy ones and hit you on the wrist. He probably got a little bit lucky there that it rolled back down into his hands. Such an important wicket,” said Adam Gilchrist, who is on Fox Cricket’s commentary panel for the Test series.

Kohli became the sixth India player to take the long walk back to the pavilion, with only 19 runs on the board.

Kohli’s dismissal was also Cummins’s 150th in Tests, making him the joint-fastest Australian to reach the milestone in terms of matches played.

Watch below Green just about held on to give Australia the crucial wicket of Kohli, who finished the year without an international hundred for the first time since 2008.
