The return of spectators to international cricket restarted the rather special trend of public proposals at cricket grounds, as was witnessed during the second ODI between Australia and India in Sydney.
As India tried to crawl their way back into the series in the second ODI, chasing a mammoth total of 390, a fan, wearing India colours, found the perfect opportunity to propose to his girlfriend, who was donning the Australia jersey. The episode unfolded just before the 21st over of India’s chase, catching the attention of cameramen even as Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer were pushing India closer to the target.
As soon as the man went down on one knee, even Brett Lee, on Fox Sports commentary duty, couldn’t help saying: “please say yes, please say yes!”. With the crowd around them cheering enthusiastically, the woman readily obliged, with the big screens at the Sydney Cricket Ground capturing the special moment and inviting a tremendous applause, including that from fielder Glenn Maxwell.

The actual cricket continued soon after, with Iyer departing three overs later to a sensational catch by Steve Smith, who scored a brilliant century in the first innings. Kohli, too, departed soon after, adding 89 to India’s total.
