England were blown away on the third day at Melbourne as Australia bowled them out for 68 to secure an innings win and retain the urn.
Hometown hero Scott Boland was the headline-grabber for Australia as he registered extraordinary figures of 6-7 on debut in front of a buoyant MCG crowd, but it was Mitchell Starc who kickstarted the rout with a gem of a delivery.
Starc – whose place in the side was under question by the likes of Shane Warne going into the series – produced a moment of magic to dismiss Ben Stokes early on the third morning.
Starc sent down a 90.4mph delivery that nipped back off the seam to beat Stokes through the gate and clean bowl England’s talismanic all-rounder.
On the Fox commentary, Warne exclaimed, “That’s an absolute ripper.”
