The iconoclastic right-hander made his debut in perhaps the greatest series of all time, the 2005 Ashes, won thrillingly 2-1 by England after Pietersen’s maiden hundred sealed a draw in the last Test at The Oval.

The series in which Pietersen’s last Test came is decidingly less fondly remembered by England fans. They were beaten 5-0 in the 2013/14 Ashes, with Graeme Swann’s Test career also coming to an end just before Pietersen’s.
